Purpose – This study is motivated by a unique phenomenon observed at Lazismu, a nationally recognized zakat institution in Indonesia, which offers clear career advancement prospects for its employees—an aspect not commonly found in other zakat organizations. In contrast, organizations lacking career development paths often experience high employee turnover, while many successful organizations tend to provide clear career trajectories and realistic projections of employees’ future roles. This prompted the author to examine career development strategies at Lazismu in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (D.I. Yogyakarta).
Design/methods/approach – The study employs a qualitative research method with a case study approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis. The data were then analyzed using descriptive analysis, which seeks to present phenomena systematically and objectively.
Findings – The findings indicate that career development at Lazismu D.I. Yogyakarta involves several key components: first, effective recruitment, which includes informing employees of their structural roles, providing orientation on organizational structure, offering guidance on digital marketing, and outlining institutional program plans—preferably recruiting those with prior experience in zakat management. Second, employee placement, which includes promotions based on performance, expertise in specific fields, or extensive experience and demonstrated leadership capabilities. Third, training and skills development programs. Fourth, career planning initiatives.
