This article examines the collaboration between a university and local communities in developing appropriate technology for waste management in urban settlements. The partnership aimed to co-create a low-cost, eco-friendly composting system suitable for high-density areas. Through action research, the project engaged engineering students, faculty members, community leaders, and residents in a series of workshops and pilot trials. The results demonstrated improved waste segregation practices, reduced organic waste, and enhanced community awareness of environmental hygiene. The success of the program was attributed to participatory design, contextual adaptation of technology, and mutual trust between stakeholders. This case study illustrates how university–community collaboration can address pressing urban challenges while enriching academic engagement.
